Summer of Service is a campaign to engage more young people in service during the summer months. The Summer of Service initiative recognizes the potential of all youth to contribute in meaningful ways to the communities in which they live through volunteer service. According to recent research, youth who are involved in their communities through service do better in school, engage in fewer risky behaviors, have a better sense of themselves, and feel more empowered to make a difference in their own lives than youth who do not participate in volunteer activities.
Target Audience: Young people who are transitioning from 8th grade (middle school) to 9th grade (high school) during the summer of 2008. During the pilot project, up to 25 youth will be accepted into each program week.
Location: Community-based organizations in Oakland County. The program activities will take place in Royal Oak Township, Pontiac and White Lake, but young people and volunteers from across Metro Detroit are invited to participate. Programming will be centered in school districts that require community service hours for high school graduation, and that commit to accept Summer of Service hours toward that requirement.
Structure: The Summer of Service pilot project will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons (2 PM to 5 PM) for three weeks in July, 2008.
Week 1: Charter Township of Royal Oak
Week 2: North Pontiac
Week 3: White Lake
Each week will be hosted by a different community organization, and will focus on a specific issue to be addressed through service.
Educational Approach: Participants will explore these issues through an experiential learning process that emphasizes these key elements of service-learning:
· engaging youth in planning the service activity;
· having youth reflect in an organized way on their service in the
context of the skills or concepts learned;
· engaging youth directly with the recipients of service; and
· ensuring that youth may serve up to 27 hours in direct service
activities.
Volunteer Leadership: AmeriCorps alumni and current corpsmembers will serve as program facilitators and project leaders. Through these relationships, the program participants will gain additional knowledge about National Service opportunities and the AmeriCorps education award.

If anyone is interested in playing volleyball, I have a group that meets in Royal Oak on Thursdays starting at 6:30. This is a new group that just started meeting. Our first meet was on May 15th. We had a really good turn-out, and we had a lot of fun playing. This is a recreational group, so skill level is not important. Just play to have fun.

For those of you who are new to the MMTL, the league is an exciting and refreshing alternative to players who would like the opportunity to play, test and improve their tennis skills against a variety of players within their skill range yet with the flexibility of scheduling their matches at a time and venue that is convenient. Among the benefits of playing in the league include:
Scheduling flexibility – schedule your matches with opponents at a mutually convenient time, day and location
Players ranked by points accumulated as well as matches won – this makes every point in every match count
Top players advance to the championship rounds – play for the opportunity to challenge top players in other Southeast Michigan cities
Play for the 2008 MMTL Southeast Michigan Champion’s Trophy and other prizes

The league starts July 14 and ends on September 14. All players will have at least 8 matches to be scheduled. Two-day playoff and championship rounds are tentatively scheduled to be played in mid September in a single venue (Varsity Tennis Center in University of Michigan-Ann Arbor was the venue of the last 2 playoffs). The East Division has started their league, but still accepting registration for the next batch of players, and will also start on July 14.
There is a one time $25 registration fee for the summer's league. Players who advance to the playoffs will be asked to pay no more than $15 to cover the court reservations and/or guest fees.
