Families are invited to take a step back in time and witness 19th century Native American culture at Metro Parent’s 17th Annual Native American Festival & Mini Pow Wow, Saturday, Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Southfield Pavilion. Native Americans representing the People of the Three Fires will gather to celebrate the customs and traditions of the indigenous Michigan Indians – Ottawa, Ojibwe and Potawatomi.
Capture the Spirit! Enjoy dancers in towering headdresses, elaborately beaded regalia, traditional teepees and fresh fry bread. Observe an authentic Mini Pow Wow, with more than 40 Native Americans dressed in regalia as they perform specialty dances, including hoop, jingle and traditional dance. Tap your feet to the beat of the native drums as the dancers twirl and sing. Peek inside a traditional tepee and wigwam. Peruse the unique wares at the Native American Arts & Crafts Bazaar, where more than 35 traders from across the Midwest and East Coast will sell handmade jewelry, pottery, blankets and more. And taste the autumn bounty including wild rice soup, fry bread, Indian tacos and buffalo burgers.
Southeast Michigan’s premier Native American Festival & Mini Pow Wow is a unique opportunity for people of all ages to experience Native American culture and traditions. Scout troops who buy group tickets can earn their Native American Heritage Patch by completing the “Celebrating Mother Earth” program at the Mini Pow Wow. All children ages 3 to 12 will receive a take-home Native American craft project.
Returning to the festival this year are the world champion Stonefish Family hoop dancers. These fourth-generation performers have been dancing since they could walk and are back to amaze the crowd with their award-winning dances. Kids and parents alike can sit around our campfire and hear Native American legends from master storyteller Tony Miron. Other activities such as live demonstrations and face painting will also entertain the crowds.
Tickets are $7.50 per person. Children 2 and under are free. Parking is free. Advance group tickets (for groups of 10 or more) are $6 per person. Group ticket deadline is Oct. 23, 2009. The Southfield Pavilion is located within the Southfield Civic Center at 26000 Evergreen Road, a half mile south of 11 Mile Road.
