There's lots of companies here that claim to know how to do tile work. There's no doubt some install tile often, but that doesn't mean they do it right. Some learned by using the WRONG or only ONE METHOD, (The method of installation is critical), and do not seem to want to ALSO learn NEWER, BETTER methods & products like DITRA uncoupling membrane or even cement backer boards. THERE IS NO GOOD WAY to place 1 1/4" thick (or thicker) "mud" over your subfloor because of the way homes have been built the past 40-50 years. You would have a big step up to the tiled floor. So, these "mud only" tile guys, are often forced to make the mud base thinner than recommended by ALL REPUTABLE tile installation organizations. They sometimes make the "mud" base under 1" thick, or less. (That is guaranteed to fail one day). IF a "mud" job could be done correctly, (1 1/4" OR THICKER), I agree, it is a very good way to set tile floors. But, MOST "mudded" tile floor DO NOT meet ANY installation STANDARDS at all. THEY ARE TOO THIN. So what's the reason to do work that way? It's cheaper. The materials cost much less.$$ & it's faster.

Others are handymen, who in most cases have no clue, BUT, they are CHEAP. So, is it done the right way? Will the job last a LIFETIME? I've read every one of these ads, and believe only 2-3 of us here are actually qualified, with EXPERIENCE, using proper METHODS depending on the situation AND LICENSING as required by the LAW for ALL RESIDENTIAL tile work.

Tile 4 You Inc. is the ONLY company that builds completely WATERPROOF - WATERTIGHT - MOLD PROOF showers with the KERDI membrane system. (see below.)

The following are a few tips to help you make a wise decision. There's much more to a good tile installation than you may think. http://www.tile4you.com - 248-689-7719

__*1. NO tile direct on drywall in damp or wet areas. (tub surrounds-showers)
__*2. NO tile direct on Green Board in damp or wet areas, as above.
__*3. NO mastic-(pre-mixed adhesive) in damp or wet areas. It's easier, but no good.
__*4. NO mastic- "Pre-Mixed" thinset for any floor-wet or dry. It's easier, but no good.
__*5. NO tiles bonded direct to plywood floors. Not a good method.
__*6. NO tiles on "scratch-coat", (metal lath + thinset mortar). Guaranteed to fail.

__*7. NO "mud-job" thinner than 3/4" in small rooms or thinner than 1 1/4" in reg. size room. The size of the rooms makes a difference. IE. Very likely to have 10-20 people in your kitchen at some time, BUT NOT likely to have that many people in your bathroom or other small space. Mudding a floor is ONE way to make an uneven floor flat, (if the setter is good), but when done right, a good mud job will add 1 5/8"- 2" total height or more, and IF not done right will fail in a few years or sooner. (hairline cracks at minimum). I often see builders' floors with grout cracks before the owner even moves in. WHY? The "mud" is too thin and not 5:1 mix, and not compacted correctly. Some tile guys mix mud at about 7:1 mix, because it's easier to work with and make it too thin. They are more interested in saving time and money.

__*8. For shower floors; the PVC "pan membrane" under the tiled floor, should have a pre-slope UNDER it. THEN the deck-mud over the "pan" sloped to the drain. You should have 2 slopes. Most showers are built wrong. Installing the pre-slope is usually the plumbers job and is usually omitted to keep the price cheap. (That is not good).

__*9. The BEST shower method involves a surface applied waterproofing membrane, this way nothing ever gets wet. see "KERDI showers"; http://picasaweb.google.com/tile4youinc This methods is recommended over wallboard, cement backer and "mud-jobs". But it's an extra step, so most tile guys don't even mention it. Watch this: http://www.schluter.com/7224.htm (click the 3rd video choice)

Remember, even when installed wrong, most tile jobs still look OK. The failure happens after a few years. For tile work, look for a "Licensed Tile Setter". I have been setting tile for a company for over 8 years and worked for a contractor for over 12 years total; doing everything from rough carpentry to finish work like trim, tile, and painting. Over 6 rehabs this year- all needed complete plumbing, painting, drywall work, some electrical, full kitchens, full bathrooms, and roofs. Most bathrooms had ceramic tile for floors and showers walls with new shower pans. Glad to say most of the homes were rentals that rented less than 2 wks (Southfield area) and one of the homes was sold less than 3 wks in Redford.

One of the jobs going on now is in Troy off 16 mile and 75, slate kitchen floors (random style, 5 diff sizes) and backsplash, utility room using 2 ft x 2 ft tile and a full bathrm with walk-in shower and floor.
