February 1 - February 11, 2010

TET Festival is Vietnamese traditional New Year Holiday (following Lunar Calendar) which usually falls into mid January � mid February. This is the time for family reunion and visits to friends and relatives. Like the Christmas and New Year in western countries, people here prepare a lot for this holiday, from renovating their houses, making cakes and a lot of food and drinks. However, in the orphanages, children do not have enough to prepare for their holiday. Most of them stay in the orphanage or centers over the Tet, only some of them go back to their home villages. Thus, there is need to prepare something for those children, so they still have good time and enjoy such big holidays.
In Ho Chi Minh City area, an international workcamp will be set up to prepare Tet holidays in Ky Quang Orphanage and Chua La Orphanage.
Volunteers will help renovating the houses, cleaning the site and making Chung Cake (traditional cake for children in Tet).

Special requirements: Interest and motivation working with children in difficult situation
Leisure activities: Vietnamese Day, International Day, self-organized city tour and excursions, etc.

Habitat cleaners are needed for Shelter to Home, Inc. We are an animal rescue group based our of Allen Park. Our mission is to rescue shelter animals and foster them until they find their forever home. We are lucky enough to have a cat habitat inside the Petsmart in Canton, MI to show off our beauties. However, we desperately need devoted people who love animals to volunteer to help us keep it clean. The position would be once a week for about an hour each time. We are trying to actually get enough volunteers so cleaners are only needed once every other week. So, depending on the day you are available we may only need once every other week. We need someone who loves working with animals. Someone with reliable transportation is preferred. Details for the position include: Filling the cats bowls, scooping litter, wiping down cages, sweeping hair out of cages, sweeping the floor, letting the cats out of the cages to stretch out and grooming the animals if needed. The main goal is to make sure the animals have what they need and they look nice and presentable for potential adopters. Plus, the fun part about it is you can play with the cats!! We are conducting a research study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) to find out what parents think are the causes of soiling in their children and what kind of therapies and strategies they use to help their children with the soiling.

Adult education and farming activities with the elderly in Mbeere district

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project is organized together with Mwienderi Women Group since 2007. The group was started in 1996 by 10 members aiming to help the community to engage in income generating activities and empower them economically. The Mbeere are making use of the natural resources e.g. horticulture, farming and bee keeping, but the rate of poverty is high. In this area, the main economic activity is farming; the majority of the people are peasants.
There will be an orientation where the objectives and expectations of the program will be presented to the volunteers. The participants in the project will be working with the elderly people. They will be involved in several activities such as teaching, adult education, book keeping, soil conservation, poultry/goat rearing, bee keeping, planting, harvesting, digging.
Cultural exchange: There will be cultural presentations where all the volunteers will have an opportunity to present their countries and cultures. Volunteers will be free to choose presentation methods like storytelling, singing, dancing, drama, speeches, etc.
Qualifications: No particular expertise or skills required. Participants should have a positive attitude, be ready to adopt and enjoy simple living conditions, be flexible and patient. However, specialized skills and expertise (such as adult education, agronomy, tutoring) will be used accordingly. Volunteers are expected to love and respect old people and the local culture, and be motivated to spend time with the older folks.
Location: Mbeere is located in the Eastern part of Kenya, approximately 100 kilometres from Nairobi.
Age range: 19 and over

S�lheimar Eco-Village, founded in 1930, is the first community in the world where the so-called able and disabled people live and work together. Inspired by the theories of Rudolf Steiner, S�lheimar has focused on cultivating both the individual and the environment and it is the first community in Scandinavia to practice organic farming.
Today, S�lheimar (the home of the sun) is a charming village of about 100 inhabitants, renowned for its international, artistic and ecological atmosphere, which prides itself on its varied cultural, social and sporting activities. The village is only a one-hour drive from Reykjavik.
The volunteers will mostly work in the �lur Forestry Centre (the only organic reforestation centre in Iceland) and in the Sunna Organic Cultivation Centre. During the project, other tasks may arise depending on the needs of the community. The work in �lur, and in the village as well, will mostly consist in building paths and planting trees in Southern Iceland Farm Forest. In Sunna we will be planting vegetables, eradicating weeds and other gardening work.

Together with a few colleagues (musicians, teachers, dancers, artists, farmers), I've been planning to build a school for the arts in the lower peninsula. At the moment we've got our eye on two dozen parcels of Michigan land, trying to find the perfect one to build a School for Fine Arts and an organic farm to start a self-sustaining community of creative people. Pondicherry, one of the former French Colonies, is located on the East Coast of India. It is one of the most tourist places in the region and has a lot to offer to the visitor. Its laidback atmosphere and amazing beaches give it a very distinctive touch. It is also a prime location for learning yoga and meditation in one of its many ashrams. It is also the home of Auroville, a famous international community created by the Guru Sri Auro Bindo.
The volunteer project is organized in cooperation with an active local NGO in the field of education and renovation. In the past years many schools and villages have benefited from the work done by international volunteers, including the 2004 Tsunami-hit regions. A shelter for children and old aged people was opened in a village 10 km from the city, providing support to the poorer sections of the population in the district. The volunteers will be involved in various activities ranging from manual work at the center, creative and entertainment activities in schools and kindergartens and spreading awareness on issues related to education, environment protection, health and hygiene. The idea is to tackle the burning issues that the rural population is facing.

Ubon Ratchatani is one of the main cities of the Isan region, in the North East of Thailand, close to the borders with Cambodia and Laos. Although it remains among the most traditional areas of the country, it is also the poorest and less developed part in terms of infrastructure or industry; creating a huge rural exodus and migration from the Isan inhabitants to Bangkok. The Khueang Nai District administration wants to dynamize the Deng Mor rural areas and stimulate English learning through the international volunteers' presence. The main target group of the project will be young people and children. Inside this larger framework, each project will address the specific target group in different villages in the Deng Mor area.
Cultural exchange is the main work of the project. The volunteers will discover the typical Isan culture and traditions, visiting villagers, farmers and local artisans, helping them in their tasks. The volunteers will also hold English teaching workshops for the children of several district villages. The exact nature of the work will depend of the needs of the village at the time of the project.
Study theme: The volunteers will learn about the culture of rural Thailand in general and the traditions and specificity of the Isan region. Thai language lessons will also be given to the volunteers.
Special requirements: A correct level of English language and the will to teach it to kids is obviously necessary. The volunteers need also to be motivated to discover Thai culture and to present the one of their country of origin.
Leisure time: Leisure time will be organised by the volunteers with the support of the group leader. The closest city is far but accessible. The region isn't very tourist attractive as such but the nature is of extraordinary beauty: rice fields, small temples and natural parks are all over the region.
New years Eve, according to the Thai Buddhist calendar takes place in April. The volunteers in the April group will have the great chance to attend the ceremonies and festivities in the village with the local population.
Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted in a traditional Isan house in the community and have access to the same basic conditions as any villager.
Location: The Deng Mor sub-district area is about 20 km far from Khueang Nai city and 60 km north west of Ubon Ratchatani city, in the Isan region, North east of Thailand.
Age range: 18 and over

Teaching deaf and blind children in Kwale

Volunteer project: The international volunteer project is organised together with Kwale School for the deaf. The school offers formal learning to hearing impaired learners and they have a small unit for blind children. The school was established in 1968 as a unit and later upgraded into a fully-fledged boarding institution.
The school has 17 fully trained teachers from the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE). The learners have various degrees of hearing losses ranging from mild to profound. The school recently received a diagnostic audiometer.
Orientation will be conducted for the volunteers to understand the objectives and expectations of the program. Volunteers will be involved in various teaching activities such as assisting the teachers in teaching sign language, playing with the kids, speech therapy, organizing games and art lessons, teaching blind students.
No particular expertise or skills required. Participants should have a positive attitude, be ready to adopt and enjoy simple living conditions, be flexible and patient. However, specialized skills and expertise (such as low visual aid, speech therapy and sign language) will be used accordingly. Volunteers are expected to love kids and be able to work with differently abled kids.
Location: Kwale is located in the Southern part of Kenya, approximately 8 and a half hours drive from Nairobi.
Age range: 19 and over

Childhelp is currently recruiting volunteer mentors (20 and older) to work one-on-one with children who live in foster care homes in Oakland , Macomb and Wayne Counties The children are ages 10-21 and have been abused and/or neglected. We ask our volunteers to make a commitment to meet with the youth 2-4 times per month, for one year. The outings are community based which means you'll pick the child up and go to the movies, library, park, etc. The outings are based on your availability and schedule (nice flexibility for college students and full time employees).

We encourage our mentors to spend TIME, not MONEY with the youth. There is a series of background checks and 6 hours of pre-match training to complete. The next new mentor training will be held on January 9th - prior to the training we will need to meet for a brief interview and orientation.

Currently there are about 12,661 Saudi students studying in the U.S. with a fraction of those studying in Philadelphia. Out of all of the international students the U.S. lets in each year, it is mainly Saudis that come with very specific cultural agendas and directives from their embassy on what they can and cannot do in the U.S. One in specific is the directly forbidden act of marrying a U.S. female. In fact, the Department of Homeland Security used to have a warning posted on its travel advisory for Saudi Arabia, but the Saudi Embassy paid the U.S. government money to take it down for fear of embarrassment.

The article basically outlined what continues to happen: Saudi male meets American female, he's charming, wonderful, polite and serious. American female has no idea about his forbidden territory or that he may have a wife set up for him at home. Time and time again Americans and Saudis are dating, and American women are finding themselves in child custody battles that invoke Sharia law (Islamic jurisprudence), one that leaves the woman with no rights whatsoever, or they are being asked to be kept "secret." These girls hide their relationships on campuses, to their boyfriend's families, and sometimes to the world at large. If you have a Saudi secret and you are willing to expose it anonymously, you can help other U.S. women understand the vast cultural clashes taking place on campus today.

In one latest story that I have, an American woman working at a university in Pennsylvania lived with her Saudi boyfriend for 3.5 years after he promised to marry her when his scholarship studies were complete and could no longer be reprimanded by his embassy. This woman is today pregnant and her boyfriend left as soon as found out, told her she should tell everyone on campus that it belongs to another man, and that he will secretly see his child. The Saudi community on campus sees her as what they define as a prostitute, and she has no recompense because she is dealing with two judicial systems, and two vastly different cultural structures.

Your story can help provide awareness and help Americans finally understand the Saudi culture we are so often surprised with. Please send me your submissions.

You are greatly mistaken if you think the organization doesn't care. I work for one of those organizations and let me share with you why we only want new items. First we ask that only $35 per person be spent on each of our clients. You MAY spend more if you like but it is NOT expected. If you cannot afford that amount then we don't want to put additional strain on YOU. You never have to purchase everything on a wish list. The lists are provided as guidelines not demands. If all you want to give is a single sweater then fine but, please let it be new.

Why don't we want used items?
1. With the amount we ask you to spend ($35) a new item is not unreasonable.
2. Doesn't everyone like something new as a gift?
3. Most importantly, Everyone has different ideas of what "used but still in good condition" means. We have had bags of USED items donated that were moldy from being in what must of been a basement flood. We don't have the staff to sort, check, and clean used items. There are also liability issues with used toys in regards to recalls, lead paint and cleanliness.

If you are donating to make someones life better then, allow us who handle these things 365 days a year, guide you to success. We are there for every other season than just Christmas. Sorry you were insulted.

Poor dogs. If you need help with them, please email me. It's a conditioned reflex of mine to help dogs in need. I can not give you a "loan", but I can adopt the helpless dogs until you get back on your feet. All you would have to do is drop them off at the Macomb animal shelter, let me know when they are there, and then I will go rescue them. I have already donated quite a bit to the shelter this year, but I just can't stand the thought of two dogs losing their home. I guarantee they will have a safe, loving home, and that they will dine on some of the finest cuisine available to man. As for request for money, I smell a scam and must delete it.

I helped out 4 families with a total of twelve children for Christmas. I also helped a few families with dinner. I did not meet scammers, what I did meet were kind people who worked, or wished that they did. I met a mom who took a two hour bus ride to work, a man who wished someone else needed help besides his family, and a mom who loved her kids enough to keep a small Christmas tradition alive. There are scammers, fools, hard working people, and those down on their luck, it is not our jobs to judge. Christmas is for all who choose to enjoy it. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.

Relay For Life is a community gathering where everyone can participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representation on the track at all times during the event--because cancer never sleeps. Relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length.

Have you just started taking an antidepressant, or an anti-anxiety drug (within the last two weeks)?

Are you experiencing some problems in your sex life?

If you have started taking an SSRI (see list below for what is an SSRI) within the last two weeks, are having problems in your sex life, are over 18 and currently involved in a sexually active relationship, you qualify for our research study. We are looking at sexual functioning in people taking SSRIs. If you participate, you will be asked to read some information and fill out three surveys about your sexual functioning online on a secure, confidential website.

The study offers you an opportunity to receive information about your anti-depressant/ anti-anxiety medication as well as a chance to win a cash prize of $50. This study can be done online, at your own convenience in your own home.

Habitat cleaners are needed for Shelter to Home, Inc. We are an animal rescue group based our of Allen Park. Our mission is to rescue shelter animals and foster them until they find their forever home. We are lucky enough to have a cat habitat inside the Petsmart in Canton, MI to show off our beauties. However, we desperately need devoted people who love animals to volunteer to help us keep it clean. The position would be once every other week for about an hour each time. We need someone who loves working with animals. Someone with reliable transportation is preferred. Details for the position include: Filling the cats bowls, scooping litter, wiping down cages, sweeping hair out of cages, sweeping the floor, letting the cats out of the cages to stretch out and grooming the animals if needed. The main goal is to make sure the animals have what they need and they look nice and presentable for potential adopters. Plus, the fun part about it is you can play with the cats!! So, if you love animals and want to spend two hours a month making a difference in their lives, please contact me. We would love to have you on board!

I was not starting an argument. I agree with you that people beg for too much on here, and agree that giving/receiving is not what Christmas is about. I was just letting you know that Christmas is not when Christ was born, since you replied with why we celebrate Christmas.
