The Supported Employment Program, located in Wayne and Oakland Counties, provides job training and placement for adults with developmental disabilities and physical impairments. The goal of the program is to introduce these adults into the competitive job market.
Summary of Position:
The primary responsibility of an Employment Specialist is to research, establish and maintain employment opportunities for persons with disabilities with community employers, for current and future business needs.
An Employment Specialist also:
Develops working relationships with the consumers, their co-workers, and employers
Finds jobs suited to match the strengths and preferences of each consumer
Provides ongoing monitoring of consumer jobs
Competencies:
Ability to work with people with a variety of disabilities
Ability to assess and develop goals and objectives for each consumer in a person centered and culturally competent manner
Ability to locate job vacancies and market consumer skills to employers
Ability to negotiate with current and prospective employers
Ability to problem solve
Ability to teach and direct others in a team environment
Good verbal and written communication skills
Cultural competence
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree preferred; or QMRP with 4 or more years experience
Previous experience working with people with disabilities or in a related field
Knowledge of ADA guidelines and types of disabilities
Valid Michigan driver’s license with appropriate insurance
Driving Record that meets agency driving criteria
Computer literate
Environment:
Work environment varies between in and outdoor activities
Position requires some travel, utilizing personal vehicle w/mileage reimbursement
Job requires working in seasonal weather conditions
Job requires working with a variety of consumer behaviors including aggression
