Under Alfred’s leadership, the company gained international acclaim, particularly in American and European markets.
About Lanternier & Limoges Porcelain
Limoges porcelain became synonymous with refinement, elegance, and technical excellence. The Lanternier factory was known for:
Hard-paste porcelain made from local kaolin clay, prized for its strength and luminous translucency
Hand-painted decoration, often featuring delicate florals, scrolling vines, and romantic Victorian-era motifs
Multi-stage kiln firing, with decoration applied over glaze and refired to permanently fuse the artwork into the surface
Fine glazing techniques, producing a glass-like finish with depth and brilliance
Each piece required skilled artisans—from throwers and mold makers to painters and kiln masters—making every tureen a collaborative work of art.
Description of This Piece
This covered tureen features a beautifully executed floral pattern in soft yet vibrant hues, characteristic of late Victorian and Belle Époque aesthetics. The brushwork shows careful shading and detail, giving the blooms a lifelike, dimensional quality. The porcelain body has a refined ivory tone with a luminous glaze that reflects light beautifully.
The lid fits properly and the overall form is graceful and balanced—ideal as a functional serving piece or as a centerpiece display item in a china cabinet.
Condition & Rarity
Finding a Lanternier covered serving piece from this era in excellent condition is increasingly rare. Many examples show wear, chips, hairlines, or restoration due to age and use. This piece has been well preserved, maintaining its glaze clarity, structural integrity, and decorative vibrancy.
Covered tureens are especially desirable because:
Lids are often lost or damaged over time
They were functional serving items, making survival in such condition uncommon
Larger forms like this Taureen Dish required more skill and carried higher original value
