This very rare large tea bin from the early 1900s was designed to hold 80 pounds of Tea Pot Number One “Uncolored” Japan Tea. The tea was shipped bulk amounts of tea to general stores throughout Michigan.
Lee & Cady was a company that specialized in wholesale groceries. The company began in 1894 in Detroit and had offices in Saginaw, Bay City, Flint, Grand Rapids, and Kalamazoo.
The bin is quite large in order to ship 80 pounds of tea. It stands 22 inches high, by 16 1/2 x 17 inches. As you can see from the photos, the tin is covered with lithographed paper. Most of the paper has remained for over a hundred years.
Besides the front, the three sides have identical artwork: why looks like a tea plant with a peacock. Two of the sides have most or all of the original paper.
The bottom has some remaining paper and just a basic design.
The top has a fancy design along with the original metal ring to open the bin.
The inside upper lid has some amazing graphics of Japanese women harvesting tea with Mt. Fuji in the background. As you can see from the photos, the inside is in great shape.
This rare tea bin came out of a general store in Evert, MI.
