A & P grocery stores actually began as the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. in 1859. By 1930, the company had 15,00 stores. Because of its huge size, the company faced many anti-trust lawsuits.
A & P grocery stores were a big deal in the Detroit area, and I remember going there with my grandma in the 1950s, right before the company started having financial troubles.
The company shipped bananas in large, sturdy containers that could be safely shipped in trucks.
This bin/container is really neat ,especially because of the deep embossed A & P logo on both sides. I believe it’s from the 40s, maybe early 50s. Apparently, the holes in the bottom were pre-tooled for screws or rivets to be fastened to two wooden skids.
While there are a few small scuffs, the aluminum is in great shape, both outside and inside. So are the handles. For a container, it must have escaped a lot of the dents and dings when moving large amounts of bananas.
The aluminum bin is lightweight and sturdy, with strong handles to carry a lot of weight.
It was made by the Industrial Products Division of the Republic Stamping and Enameling Company of Canton, Ohio
The bin measures 34 1/2 inches long, 16 inches wide, and 11 1/2 inches deep.
I had always intended to display this piece in my den, filled with blankets and pillows, but it never happened. So it needs to go to a new owner who will appreciate it.
It’s a really great example of vintage advertising from an iconic store from back in the day.
