I’ve lived near Detroit most of my life and even delivered newspapers as a kid, but I’ve never seen an ad banner like this.
This banner is huge (slightly over 4 feet wide x 1 1/2 feet tall) and was probably placed in a large window to advertise home delivery of The Detroit Times. The Times began in Detroit in 1900 and finally went out of business in 1960.
The Times was known as the third wheel in Detroit newspapers, behind the Detroit News and Free Press. It was famous for its glaring headlines, especially during World War II. In 1951, the newspaper sold nearly a half million copies.
The banner is in good shape, with a small tear in the upper right conner. The banner originally came folded in eighths for storage. There is some minor discoloring on the edges and two pinpricks in both upper corners, probably when it was displayed. Near the bottom left corner is printed “Processed in U.S.A.”
This large banner is a great remnant of the golden age of Detroit newspaper history.
