The Brick and Mortar Collective (Brick House) is a nonprofit housing co-operative association in Detroit, MI. Our mission is to provide affordable room and board to activists, artists, educators, students, and community builders.
Members are currently renovating a house at Bewick and Jefferson on the Eastside (with help from some professionals) for occupancy in Summer 2017.
Our current residence is on Taylor st. off of Woodward.
Brick House is a co-operative, meaning that we all share food, rent, and utility costs. Our budget, and therefore rent, is decided by our members, but generally average around $350/month (all inclusive).
Members are expected to complete 3 hours of work cleaning/maintaining our current rental house every week, in addition to putting in biweekly hours helping to renovate our future home!
The house works to create a feminist, anti-racist, anti-capitalist, and ecologically sustainable space. We try to center these ideals within house decision making and our interpersonal interactions!
